Fill is not all the same
Bulk fill, select fill, drainage aggregate and topsoil serve different purposes. The contractor should explain the proposed material and why it suits the intended finish.
Compaction in layers
Compaction equipment has a limited effective depth. The void should generally be rebuilt in planned lifts rather than filled to the top and compacted only at the surface.
Testing and reports
Some projects may benefit from testing or an engineer prepared specification, especially where future structures are contemplated. The appropriate standard and documentation should be determined before work.
Final grading
The completed surface should integrate with house levels, paths, fences and drainage. Topsoil and turf should not conceal low areas that collect water.

- Which approvals, licences, inspections or specialist reports apply?
- How will waste, fill, drainage and compaction be handled?
- What access assumptions and exclusions are built into the price?
- What documents and photographs will be provided at completion?
