Why settlement happens
Settlement can result from unsuitable material, thick uncontrolled layers, poor moisture control, trapped water or inadequate compaction. The deepest part of the former pool deserves particular attention.
Compaction equipment has limits
A machine only affects a certain depth of material. That is why controlled placement in layers matters more than making the top look firm.
Testing is project specific
Testing may be useful where a future load is planned or where a professional specification requires it. Ask who sets the target, who performs the testing and what report is supplied.
Surface drainage still matters
Even well compacted fill can become problematic if the new yard directs water toward the house or creates a low basin. Final levels and stormwater management remain part of the job.
